Seven years later, David's mother marries Mr. Edward Murdstone. David does not like his stepfather as he thrashes David for falling behind with his studies. He is sent away to a boarding school, Salem House. In the meantime, his mother dies. He walks all the way from London to Dover to find his only relative, his aunt Miss Betsey. She decides to bring David up despite Mr. Murdstone's bid to regain custody of David.
